Light

We heard a loud bang and clatter. Trying to make sense of the sound, I envisioned a large dump truck had dropped its gate on the road. Then it sounded like a heavy load of gravel was dumped quickly – too quickly for it to be a load of gravel.

“What was that?” I asked my husband. “I’m not sure,” was his reply.

I went back to do my work, but it seemed a little gloomy, so I flipped on the light switch. Nothing. Hmmmm… I promptly went to the electric panel, but it seemed ok. Returning upstairs, I tried a light switch in another room. Nothing. I went to seek my husband’s help who was still investigating the source of the sound. “I think a transformer blew,” he reported.

My work is dependent on power and the internet. I felt lost. “Now what?” We went on a discovery walk, to see that a tree had fallen on a transformer and lines were down. Not able to do my computer work, I tidied up the house. I plugged in the vacuum and flipped the switch to turn it on. “Oh brother! I just tried to run the vacuum!” I chuckled as I reported to my husband.

The longer the outage went, I felt my anxiety rise. Not because I was afraid, but because of my dependence on electricity and the inability to do what needed to be done for my job.

As the sun set and night fell, the next thing that hit me was the darkness. Light is important to me. We usually have the curtains open to allow lots of natural light in and in the evenings, I turn a lot of lights on. But that night, nothing. It was black!

The power came on about 4:15 a.m. but the morning was grey and gloomy. “I’m tired of the darkness,” I told my husband. It had been less than 24 hours without electricity, and I couldn’t stand the darkness anymore! I went around flipping on light switches.

As I sat to spend time with my heavenly Father, this was the Scripture I read:

“Because of, and through the heart of tender mercy and loving-kindness of our God, a Light from on high will dawn upon us and visit [us] to shine upon [us] and give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, to direct and guide our feet in a straight line into the way of peace.” Luke 1:78-79 (AMP)

Ahhhh… Light! And as a bonus - peace!
